Cultivating and Maintaining A Reading Habit
“Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.”
-Frederick Douglass
Introduction: Reading is not just a hobby. It is a key tool for human development. Cultures, stories, perspectives, thoughts, ideas - everything that matters is shaped by the process of reading. But these days, it has become increasingly difficult to maintain a longstanding reading habit.
Project Overview: This project formed an integral component of the Design For Social Responsibility Module, in which our objective was to instigate social transformation through our initiatives. I chose to address the issue of declining reading habits, which I discerned as a result of the transition to digital learning during the pandemic.

Background: Until high school, in India, due to the curriculum presets, we have a need to maintain a reading culture. Secondly, despite the digital revolution, since India still largely maintains a textbook culture, reading habit is maintained during the school years. But in the age of social media, reading for leisure or pleasure has decreased in moderate readers. With college and university education, depending on the courses we take the reading culture is continued, however the same issue of digital media and easy reading culture is sustained over the reading for pleasure culture by the students.
